October13th Wildcatter Weekend at Spindletop Gladys City
How do we get oil out of the ground?
We’ve all seen oil derricks before. Southeast Texas is littered with them- new and shiny, ancient and rusty, and everything in between.
My dad used to work on a drilling rig and has tried to explain to me what his role was. Still, I’ve never really understood how they work. It’s a shame, as they play such a rich role in our Golden Triangle economy.
Spindletop Gladys City, on the Lamar Beaumont Campus, is a great place to learn more about oil production and our history as an oil producing region in an environment that is ideal for the youngest child, their parents, and their grandparents alike.
Their October “Wildcatter Weekend” is the perfect time to visit as a family. Grandparents, adult children, and grandchildren. The Wildcatter Weekends are designed to have activities for all ages- and activities that multiple generations can enjoy together. For adult visitors, there will be a special display honoring The Hamill Brothers – Al, Curt & Jim. Their legacy began with work on the historic Spindletop oil well in October 1900. Gladys City will recognize the Hamill’s tenacity, ingenuity and success in developing this historic oil field with a special video presentation throughout the day. For children and families, there will be a special fun, hands on, activity. Families will be able to work together to build their own Spindletop derricks.
Family activity sessions will be held at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the Log Cabin Saloon.
Wildcatter weekends can draw a pretty large crowd, so for the family activity, reservations are encouraged, but not required.
